Advice and information

The security of IELTS material and test results is of paramount importance, and numerous procedures are in place to safeguard this. The following is a general outline of these procedures, but for obvious reasons, the IELTS partners do not make public details of this aspect of their work.

  • All IELTS centres are required to follow a detailed Code of Practice, specifying how results are to be recorded and forwarded to Cambridge ESOL.
  • Candidates must provide photographic evidence of identity when they apply for the test, when they register at the start of the test day, at various times during the written papers and at the start of the interview.
  • The Test Report Form is printed on security-enhanced paper. It is authenticated by a centre stamp, an IELTS validation stamp and a photograph of the candidate. Registered organisations are also able to verify candidates' results
  • Candidates are strongly advised to read the candidate rules and regulations before the day of the test. Any candidate caught infringing any of the candidate rules and regulations will have their test result disqualified and notification will be sent to any nominated receiving institution or professional body.

Weighting of components

All four modules are equally weighted.

Results

IELTS provides a Test Report Form giving a profile of ability to use English as assessed by the Test. A score in each of the four modules, and an overall score, are recorded as levels of ability, called Bands. These Band Scores are recorded on the candidate's Test Report Form. Each Band corresponds to a generalised descriptive statement of a candidate's English at that level. The profile provided on an IELTS Test Report Form is normally valid for a period of two years.

Issuing of results

Marking in centres ensures that results are normally issued within two weeks of a candidate taking the test.

Examination dates

Each of the test centres schedules their administrations to suit local needs. Individual centres should be contacted for their programmes.
